Manly Wade Wellman (1903-1986) was an author best known for his fantasy and horror stories set in the Appalachian Mountains. He was born in Angola, where his father was a physician at a British medical outpost. He later moved to the United States and was educated at Wichita Municipal University (now Wichita State University) in Kansas and Columbia Univeristy. E. Hoffmann Price was born in California, educated at the US Military Academy, and served in World War I in the US Cavalry. He turned to full time writing in the 1930s and was a prolific writer of pulp fiction including adventure, western, and weird fiction.
